Hi Murphy,

I'm posting your email back to the DCB forum so that others can benefit from the discussion.

Indeed, ICA-AtoM and DCB are both basically the same application - they just have a different "theme".  In fact, both are based on the "Qubit" framework - which is the generic version of the application.  Because Qubit is open-source, anybody is welcome to take the source-code and build their own theme/application.

The different theme for ICA-AtoM vs. DCB mostly involves a different logo, a different color scheme and layout, some variations in the labelling and a different default standard for descriptions (Dublin Core for DCB, ISAD-G for AtoM).

Recommendations for start-up

Hi Murphy,

ICA-AtoM and the DCB are very similar in design and you can customize the labels and menu names in both of them. One key difference is that the DCB contains three description templates to choose from: Dublin Core, Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) and Rules for Archival Description (RAD); while ICA-AtoM includes these three plus General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD(G)). All of these templates can be used to create multi-level descriptions.

If you consider your institution to be primarily an archives as opposed to a library, then you should probably go with ICA-AtoM, since that is the software that other archives will be using.

Oh, and a web page...

There is currently no web page that I'm aware of that compares ICA-AtoM to DCB, I'll pass on the request to Evelyn, our documentation specialist.

There is this page that discusses the difference between Qubit and ICA-AtoM - which is analagous to the Qubit to DCB relationship.

Regards,

David

Does anyone have any reccomendations for a "start-up".

The Nicola Valley Museum/Archives has numerous historical quarterlies, roughly 8,000 historical photos and a wide variety of other resource material, but none of it has been catalogued in a digital form.  Does anyone have any reccomendations regarding DCB vs. ICA-AtoM when starting from scratch.

Thanks, Murphy Shewchuk
